Ceremony to Be Held to Commemorate the Groundbreaking of The Navy Special Operations Memorial in Virginia Beach

Suzanna FisherAug 12, 2022

On August 19th, The Navy Special Operations Foundation (NSOF), in partnership with the Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Association (NEODA), will participate in the time-honored tradition of breaking ground on a very special project to be completed on board Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek-Fort Story.

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA - August Ilth - Over two years ago, these organizations came together with a similar vision to accomplish an enormous undertaking in creating a Memorial to honor all the members of the Navy Special Operations community who have given their lives while in service to their nation.

The Memorial will be erected over the next 12-18 months, at an estimated cost of $100,000. While the pandemic created unique challenges in the design, awareness and fundraising efforts, the project gained final approval in June of this year and is set to begin construction in the fall.

The design of the Memorial was carried out with thoughtful reflection and will include a mediation garden with labyrinth, markers along a winding pathway which will visually depict the evolution of the community since the second World War, leading to pillars with life-size statues representing Navy Diver and EOD Operators, and a granite archway with the names of the fallen.

The groundbreaking will take place at 10:00am at the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group Two
compound with hundreds of current and former Navy operators and their family members in attendance.

Remarks will be given by Commander, Navy Expeditionary Combat Command (NECC), Rear Admiral Joseph Diguardo, Jr., and Chairman of NSF's Board of Directors, Frank Moreau RADM USN (ret).
